Thursday 15th November 2024: Girls' Football.
The girls team played for the first time together and had a brilliant time.  Stemming from our PE lessons, the girls have shown a growing passion for the sport and this shone through in the tournament.  They went unbeaten in the tournament but unfortuately finished second in the group so missed out on qualifying for the County Finals by 1 point.

Wednesday 19th June 2024: Cricket County Finals
After qualifying from the Yeovil Area finals, we were invited to the County Finals at Wemdon Cricket Club.  All teams were placed into three groups of three.  Unfortunately, we lost both group games by about 20 runs and there were placed in a final seeding group to play for 7th-9th place.  In these games, we played two teams from the Bristol region, winning both: 1st game: 106 runs to 60; 2nd game: 60 runs to 47 which meant we finished in 7th place.  This is still quite some achievement for the boys who can say they are the 7th best team in the county, with only two of the team playing regularly outside of school.
Both other teams from our original group went on to do well in their respective placing groups, suggesting we were in a very strong group to begin with.
We are very proud of how encouraging and supportive they were of each other.

Friday 14th June 2024: South West Football Finals
After their success in the County Finals, Holy Trinity were asked to represent Somerset in a football festival at Devon Football Association headquaters against schools from all over the region: Cornwall, Devon, Somerset.  To celebrate Euro 2024, the team were named Serbia.  After qualifiying from their group, that contained eight teams, they went all the way, winning: the round of 16, the quater finals, the semi-finals (on penalties) and the final 1-0 .  The tea did not concede a goal in the whole tournament, and rightly so Romeo was named 'Keeper of the Tournament'.
Here is the article, written by Adam Hayman, Head of Recruitment at Plymouth Argle Football Club, and organiser of the event:

On Friday, June 14th, 2024, the Devon FA grounds in Newton Abbot were transformed into a vibrant hub of youthful energy and competitive spirit as the South West Primary Schools Finals took place. This significant event, coinciding with the opening day of Euro 2024, was organized by Adam Hayman, Head of Academy Recruitment at Plymouth Argyle, and was enthusiastically supported by Saints Southwest. It brought together 16 qualifying schools from Cornwall, Devon, and South Somerset, offering a platform for young footballers to showcase their talents.

Participating Schools

The participating schools, representing a wide geographical spread, included:

  1. Sherwell Valley
  2. Canada Hill
  3. Gatehouse
  4. Montgomery
  5. Highweek
  6. Oldway
  7. Thurlbear
  8. Danesfield Middle School
  9. Wynstream
  10. Holy Trinity
  11. Tregadillet
  12. Widey Court
  13. Trinity School
  14. Leigham
  15. Ludgvan
  16. Elburton

Tournament Structure

The tournament format was meticulously planned, beginning with the 16 schools divided into two groups of eight. Following the group stages, the competition transitioned into a knockout format. The top four teams from each group progressed to the Cup competition, while the teams placed fifth to eighth moved into the Plate competition. This structure ensured that every team had the chance to compete for honors, regardless of their initial performance.

Group Stage Highlights

The group stages were dominated by schools from South Devon, with standout performances from Oldway School in Paignton and Sherwell Valley in Torquay, both topping their respective groups. The games were characterized by fast-paced action, skillful play, and a high level of sportsmanship, setting the stage for the thrilling knockout rounds.

Knockout Stage Drama

The knockout stages did not disappoint, delivering intense matches and dramatic moments, including the nerve-wracking penalty shootouts that saw some favourites (given their performances in the Group Stage) knocked out and unexpected victors emerging. The competitive spirit and resilience of the young players were on full display as they fought hard to advance to the finals.

Cup Competition

In the Cup final, Holy Trinity from Yeovil triumphed over Elburton from Plymouth with a narrow but decisive 1-0 victory. The final was a testament to the skill and determination of both teams, but it was Holy Trinity's day to shine as they lifted the coveted trophy.

Plate Competition

The Plate final was equally exciting, with Trinity School from Teignmouth emerging victorious against Danesfield Middle School from Taunton. Trinity School's win in the Plate competition underscored the depth of talent present at the tournament.

Individual Awards

The tournament also recognized outstanding individual performances. The awards were presented to the following players:

  • Goalkeeper of the Tournament: Romeo (Holy Trinity)
  • Players of the Tournament:
    • Ben (Trinity)
    • Ian (Montgomery)
    • Caiden (Sherwell Valley)
    • Reece (Ludgvan)
    • Scarlett (Gatehouse)

These players were celebrated for their exceptional skills, leadership, and contributions to their teams throughout the event.

Conclusion

The South West Primary Schools Finals 2024 were a resounding success, bringing together young athletes from across the region for a day of football, fun, and friendship. The event highlighted the passion for football in the South West and provided a memorable experience for all participants.

Special thanks go to Adam Hayman and Saints Southwest for their excellent organization and support, ensuring that the day ran smoothly and that every child had the opportunity to shine on this special stage. As these young stars look forward to their futures, the memories and lessons from this tournament will undoubtedly inspire them for years to come.
